Helicopter Training from Helicentre

Training - Private Pilots Licence PPL(H)

Aim

The aim of the PPL (H) course is to train the student pilot to fly effectively and safely under Visual Flight Rules (VFR).

Requirements

The applicant can start logging hours when they are 14 years, they are allowed to fly supervised solo when they are 16 years old and can hold a PPL (H) at the age of 17 years.

The minimum training requirement for a person with no other aviation experience to gain a PPL (H) is 45 hours. This is broken down into different sectors as below.

  • 25 hours minimum dual instruction
  • 10 hours minimum solo flight (of which 5 hours must be solo navigation)
  • 1 solo qualifying cross country of a distance of 100 nautical miles with 3 full stop landings at different aerodromes.
  • 5 hours of simulated instrument flight (with no reference to the outside horizon)

There are also several multiple choice ground exams that must be passed in order to gain a PPL (H). These are essential as the knowledge that you will gain when studying these subjects will be used in everyday aviation one you have gained your licence. The exams are listed below.

  • Aviation Law & Operational Procedures
  • Human Performance & Limitations
  • Navigation and Radio Aids
  • Meteorology
  • Aircraft (General) & Principles of Flight
  • Flight Performance & Planning
  • Communications (written)

These exams are generally self study and they all can be taken on site at Helicentre. If required extra tuition can be given by a professional instructor on the desired topic.

One communications oral exam must be completed as well as the written exam. This is where the individual will sit down in a separate room from the examiner (with simulated communications systems connecting the two) and run through every day and emergency procedures. At Helicentre we regularly run these courses and have all the correct facilities to complete the final exam.
